January Gnomes.

Just a little painting.  The little gnomes on the sled were from something I used to draw when the girls first came here from Guatemala. The girls were young and most definitely did not understand English.  My spanish was limited… and things like ” we have an opportunity to go sledding” were way out of my bilingual limitations.  I remember trying to explain the idea that snow would fall from the sky… then we will bundle up and go out and purposefully slip down hills on pieces of wood and plastic.  I was met with skeptical looks.   Back then we  had a whiteboard in the kitchen and while the kids would eat their breakfast I would draw little pictures so everyone would know the daily rhythm. The gnomes would always look on ,as they flew kites or caught frogs, as I sketch bulls eyes for shopping at Target and a duster for a cleaning day.   So on that day, I  took the opportunity and drew the little gnomes sledding.

I think the gnomes sold it to them, honestly.

Before I fill in the squares with our family obligations I wanted to share it here.  If you want… feel free to print it off… or make it your wallpaper for your computer desk top.   I plan on using it , after I fill it out, for the family computer.  This way I will always have our plans at the ready… and everyone will be in the loop.  Much better than grey and cloudy ole ical.

I absolutely love that! I have a magnetic white board on our frig that we erase each month and put all the new activities on together. When we started using it, my daughter was too young to read so I drew pictures. Now that they are all reading I just write out our activities but now that I see your calendar, I think I may add some pictures back in. Loved your post!

Last night I went out Calendar shopping and did not see anything I wanted to hang in our homeschool space and thought about trying and make my own. Well, yours is wonderful! My mind is made up. I am going to do my own and while I do not have the artistic talent you have, yours will be an inspiration. (I think your idea of using the gnomes to communicate your daily rhythm to your girls is wonderful! great idea )

This is so precious! I love the story of how sketching out little pictures helped you to communicate with your daughters even without words. What a great idea!

yes I really had forgotten it till recently… I guess I didn’t think very much of it at the time…more of a survival thing, I guess.

very sweet… I will always feel like a gnome as we don our trailing touques and zoom down our snowy slopes! You do make me smile! My son is in Mexico right now with the grands… closer to Guatemala than our Canada Northlands are… He had a splendid posada Christmas!
