A plant fossil.

Sitting in front of my sunny snowy studio window and contemplating this Alethopteris sullivanti. How long ago an impression was made… and the thing which caused it is long gone. Forever fossilized. Someone could look at this and think it was just an old rock. I look at it and see an amazing story.
I think of the beating this rock has taken…
how many times it has been kicked to the side…
how many times it was stepped on.
My fingerprint rubs up against this rock and I connect with a garden from long ago which contained a plant that never was consumed only immortalized forever.
This little Alethopteris lays quietly tone on tone .
It is not shiny like an agate or fiery like an opal.
It doesn’t have the same brilliance of color like the amethysts which catch the light on my windowsill.
But I run my thumb over the little leaves and think again…never consumed only immortalized.

This one was recently gifted to me.. but I have ones my great grandfather found. Actually there is a place very near me that these are readily available.
